Save the Teachers
Overpopulated Classroom Campaign
The goal for this project was to create a fictional campaign to bring awareness towards overworked and overwhelmed teachers due to overpopulated classrooms. The idea is that, in an effort to reduce classroom sizes and help teachers, Congress has passed a Save the Teachers Act of 2021. According to this new law, depending on the students’ GPA upon entering tenth grade, the student will be able to continue their education, join an apprenticeship program, be desexed, or be used as a human test subject to further science.
These tactics may be extreme, but teachers in the public school system all throughout America face the daunting responsibility of taking care of 30 or more students per class period every day. It is a real issue and I wanted to shine a light on the problem.
The Website
The website is intended to look like a legitimate news platform. I was inspired by several news platforms and the colors of our American flag. I had fun constructing the faux news articles, although most were exaggerated and false, still some were based on true stories. I created all the written content and events based on my research, my mom, who is a teacher, and her teacher friends’ experiences, and my own imagination.
The home page highlights several shocking news articles. Some of these articles are based on true stories while others are fictional, but with some underlying truth.
When you click on the main, breaking news article from the home page, you are sent to this page. Here, the “new law” that Congress just passed is explained further and the reasoning behind why they came to their conclusion.
The website continues to an announcements page. Here, information about free therapy is advertised, a memorial service for those teachers who have passed due to the stress. There is also a posting for a celebratory event for teachers where they will be uplifted, appreciated, and celebrated.
This portion of the website goes into detail about the criteria students must meet and the consequences they will face, if they do not do well in school. The student’s GPA will determine their future.
The truth comes out on this page. Do not worry, Congress will not be passing such law, as far as I know; but there truly is an issue with overpopulated classrooms and overwhelmed teachers. This page offers ways to help teachers through donations and signing a petition to get Congress’ attention about the issue and asking them to do something about it.
On this page, you can purchase a tombstone to place in front of your school to raise awareness to the issue, a poster, or any other merchandise. All proceeds go towards the Save the Teachers Foundation.
The Merchandise
Teachers endure a lot. Sometimes they may feel like their heads are going to explode, like they are drowning in kids and work, or they may feel dead inside. The illustration style is intended to look like hand drawn illustrations created by the teachers, who are crying for help and using the school supplies they have in their classroom. The tombstones are a shocking display that hopefully gets people thinking about what is going on in the lives of teachers and how they feel.
