On most Sundays, my parents enjoy sitting down with a bottle of wine and a charcuterie board while listening to music and talking. I was inspired by their love and love of wine as well as the old saying “aging like fine wine” when creating this gift. The designs and color palette were not only inspired by vineyards’ branding and wine packaging, but also by their wedding colors.
This project is a dedication to my parents. They have always been amazing and supportive parents throughout my and my brother, Ryan’s life. They have built a strong, stable, and safe home that, although not perfect, has always been filled with love, joy, and forgiveness. They have set a wonderful example of what a marriage should look like, as well as raised Ryan and I into the man and woman we are today.
I presented the project as a gift to my parents on their wedding anniversary on July 23.
Ages Like Fine Wine
A Gift to My Parents
The Book
The book takes my parents down memory lane. It has 2 separate sides, but comes together to form one book, just like my parents’ lives. On the left, I share my dad’s story and on the right, I share my mom’s. However, as you can see, several times throughout the book there are overlapping elements to represent their unity. I chose the san serif versus serif to illustrate how different they are but also complement each other. The wine bottle opener as well as the frames that appear throughout the book were hand drawn on a napkin with ink marker to form that bleeding effect. The technique is a bit messy and imperfect, but still illustrates something beautiful and whole, just like my parents.
I loved getting to look through pictures of my family, as well as learning and imagining what life was like for them growing up.
The Wine Box
This vintage wine box opens and can store up to 3 wine bottles. The logo I burned onto the wood was inspired by my research and combination of different elegant wine logos and other elegant branding elements.
The Vinyl
I used several elements from the book and wooden wine box while creating this vinyl. The title of the vinyl, Cuvée, indicates when one wine is created from more than one grape variety and can indicate that the wine is of very high quality or special reserve. Some of the songs I chose are sweet and romantic, like “Wonderful Tonight,” while others are more lighthearted and sillier, like “Fat Bottomed Girls.” No matter the song or artist, I made my selection with great thought and care.
