Embody Power
Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign
Embody means to demonstrate, express, or stand for. Power means strength, ability, and to be influential. We want women to Embody Power.
Our goal is to bring awareness to a wicked problem: sexual assault on college campuses. We sought to empower women and to bring awareness to the subject to help prevent it. Even though it is a difficult topic to discuss, if we as students, educators, and society in general wish to prevent occurrences from happening, it is critical that we engage in an open and honest discussion about sexual assault.
My project partner and I agreed to create a campaign with an elegant and feminine design. We wanted to stay consistent with the existing color for sexual awareness - teal and chose to use its complimentary color, orange. Floral details represent love, emotion, sex, and the female vagina. I selected the bold san serif typeface because of the sure footedness the serifs represent, the curved edges that reflect a woman’s body, and the counter of the “o” imitating a female’s genitalia.
The Posters
We created a series of simple, yet eye-catching poster designs. The shock factor of seeing a nude body is intended to make the viewer stop, look and think about the message. Floral designs are strategically placed to represent an area that might be touched during a sexual assault with “Consent Required” overlapping the body to further remind the viewer of our message. On the bottom left is our call to action. “Enough is enough” with the help hotline phone number to call for help.
The Personal Defense Kit
For the packaging, we wanted to create something that was there for that “what if” because as the inside of the package explains, you can control what you do but not what others do. This kit equips the user with self-defense tools, which includes: pepper spray, personal alarm, and a key knife. Once the user receives and takes out the self-defense tools, the packaging is designed to be repurposed as a tampon case, that women can place in their backpack or handbag.
The Social
Instagram has become a key tool to connect people worldwide. College students, as well as many others in all walks of life, use the social media platform. We wanted to utilize another tool to bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. Followers will be able to view encouraging stories, news updates, and information on how to seek help when needed.
The Merchandise
We wanted the t-shirt design to be simple because one simple “No” should be more than enough to stop the unwanted sexual attack. White t-shirts with black text further represent the fact that this matter should be straight forward. There is no compromising. Flowers are placed over the breasts, drawing attention to the area, but as always, consent IS REQUIRED!
The pins and stickers are a fun item to collect and share with friends that also bring awareness to the issue. Design elements that have been seen throughout the campaign such as the flowers, logos, and body parts are represented in these collectable items.
